Powering a Sustainable Future: Delta Electronics Boosts India’s EV Charging Infrastructure

As India’s electric vehicle (EV) market experiences rapid growth, the need for a robust charging infrastructure becomes paramount. The expansion of EVs on Indian roads requires a complementing network of reliable and efficient charging stations. Delta Electronics India is at the forefront of this development, pioneering innovative charging solutions to support the country’s transition to sustainable transportation. In an exclusive interview, Niranjan Nayak, Managing Director of Delta Electronics India, shares insights into how the company is shaping the future of EV charging infrastructure in India.

How has the EV market in India evolved in recent years, and what is Delta’s role in this growth?

We have seen substantial growth in the electric vehicle movement in India over the last three to five years. Although there was a slight slowdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, the market has picked up again. The two-wheeler segment is experiencing rapid growth, and the four-wheeler industry is also seeing numerous new models launched by various OEMs. Government policies and support have been instrumental in this growth.

At Delta, we leverage our position as the world’s largest power electronics and power supply manufacturer to provide critical components and infrastructure for EV technology. We have developed various components suitable for both global and Indian markets and offer a range of EV charging solutions, from 3.3 kW AC Mini to 240 kW chargers. Our local R&D, manufacturing, and service infrastructure in India give us a significant advantage in supporting the EV ecosystem here.

Can you elaborate on Delta’s EV charging solutions and their unique features?

Delta offers a comprehensive range of EV charging solutions, including both AC and DC chargers. Our infrastructure solutions range from 3.3 kW AC Mini chargers to high-capacity 240 kW chargers. We emphasize local development, with our design center, manufacturing units, and sales offices spread across India. This local approach ensures that our solutions are tailored to the specific needs of the Indian market.

One of our unique offerings is the Green EV Charging solution, which integrates renewable energy sources like solar power with energy storage solutions. This setup ensures that the entire charging infrastructure can be powered by renewable energy, aligning with the global push for net-zero emissions and a sustainable future.

How does Delta address the challenges of EV infrastructure beyond metropolitan areas?

Expanding EV infrastructure beyond metropolitan areas to tier-two and tier-three cities presents certain challenges, primarily due to lower awareness and the vast geographical diversity of India. Initial challenges include ensuring adequate electrical load capacity at installation sites, which is being addressed by respective state electricity boards.

However, these challenges also present learning opportunities. By starting with metro cities and gradually expanding, we can develop robust, long-term solutions rather than just quick fixes. This phased approach allows us to refine our strategies and create a more resilient EV infrastructure across the country.

How does Delta leverage its global experience to enhance its EV solutions in India?

Being a global company, Delta brings extensive experience from various markets, including the Americas, Europe, and Taiwan. We collaborate with our international offices to understand different market requirements, certification standards, safety norms, and best installation practices. These global insights are invaluable in shaping our solutions for the Indian market.

We also engage with local policymakers and government agencies, sharing our global learnings to help formulate effective strategies and best practices for India’s EV landscape. This collaborative approach ensures that our solutions are both globally benchmarked and locally relevant.

What are Delta’s key strategies for customization and local innovation in India?

In India, we focus on value engineering to provide products that meet specific customer requirements without unnecessary features. Safety, quality, and reliability are our top priorities. We work closely with customers to understand their needs and deliver customized solutions that are user-friendly and suitable for the local context.

Moreover, we are strengthening our supply chain within India to improve cost efficiency and productivity. Currently, 85% of our EV chargers are designed, manufactured, and supplied in India, with only 15% of components imported. This local focus not only enhances our operational efficiency but also supports the broader Make in India initiative.

After-sales services too is crucial for customer satisfaction and the long-term success of our products. Delta has established a robust service infrastructure across India, including online and technical call centers, authorized service partners, and a network of trained engineers. This comprehensive support system ensures that any issues can be addressed promptly, providing our customers with reliable and efficient service.
