Capgemini has strengthened its collaboration with Ericsson to accelerate the deployment of 5G solutions, a key component of Intelligent Industry. As part of their ongoing collaboration, Capgemini has deployed the 5G (standalone) Industry Connect solution from Ericsson at its 5G Lab in Mumbai[2] to enable industry innovation, experimentation and deployment of 5G and Edge technologies for clients across industries.

As 5G is bringing a step-change in connectivity, services automation, autonomous devices and applications across every industry, Capgemini’s 5G Labs for Industries are designed to help organizations from across sectors to pivot their business towards Intelligent Industry.

The multidisciplinary team of experts at the Lab will accompany and support organizations in their exploration of the latest use cases; experiencing new perspectives on how 5G is transforming their industry; and in helping them to build, monetize, and strategize what 5G brings next for their business.

Ericsson has deployed its Industry Connect solution at the 5G Lab. Ericsson Industry Connect is a plug and play, pre-packaged and pre-integrated dedicated network product with Ericsson pre-selected components. This solution can be deployed by industry customers requiring a fully private (i.e., on-premise) deployment for limited coverage areas, for example, in manufacturing or warehousing. In the 5G Lab, it will enable enterprises across different industry verticals like health, safety, manufacturing test out 5G use cases that can be applied by the industry.

Spread over 1300 sq. ft, Capgemini’s 5G Lab in Mumbai is a state-of-the-art facility that offers an agile and collaborative environment, which leverages best-of-breed technologies on network, cloud, edge computing, hardware and software solutions, in compliance with local regulations. The Lab will support Capgemini’s global clients in 5G end-to-end transformation through three main offerings:

  • 5G & Edge ideation catalyst program for 5G immersion and opportunity framing
  • 5G & Edge use case acceleration platform to implement business use cases on a pre-packaged platform
  • 5G & Edge Fab Lab to setup capabilities to operate a client-exclusive 5G Lab

Ashwin Yardi, Chief Executive Officer – India, at Capgemini and member of the Group Executive Committee said “The Capgemini 5G Lab offers a “ready to use” platform for our customers to ideate, innovate and deploy use cases as they adopt new technologies which will enable them to accelerate their digital transformation journey towards Intelligent Industry. This 5G lab will support our global clients and cater to four main industry categories namely Smart Factory, Smart Utilities, Smart City and Smart Retail to enhance the relevance of the Lab’s use cases in the multisectoral paradigm”.

Nadine Allen, Head of Enterprise Business, Ericsson South East Asia, Oceania and India, said “Industry Connect is a secure, easy to install, easy to manage turnkey Industry 4.0 solution providing 4G LTE as well as the latest 5G standalone cellular technology. We are delighted to collaborate with Capgemini to set up this 5G Lab in India to test potential 5G use cases for enterprises as the country prepares to launch 5G.”

Capgemini has a strong existing portfolio of use cases across industries and the 5G Lab offers live demos for some of those plus many more that are in development with global clients.

These include:

  • Autonomous Intralogistics AIV
A customized Autonomous Intralogistics AIV (Automated Intelligent Vehicle) and a software solution deployed through 5G network and distributed intelligence achieved by cloud-edge architecture. This helps in real-time decisions that lets the vehicle navigate autonomously and reach a destination point, dynamically re-routing itself when faced with obstacles. Such solutions can be deployed across multiple sectors including smart factories, smart retail, and smart cities.
  • Smart Health
A real-time teleultrasound solution supported by a 5G network and AI that performs preliminary diagnosis for remote doctor assistance. This provides primary health centers with the platform capabilities to optimize patient health checks delivering multiple remote healthcare benefits.
  • Smart Surveillance for Worker Safety
A real-time surveillance solution enabled by 5G/Edge that performs intelligent monitoring and analysis to track and report security breach, fatalities, and other safety incidents through dashboards and real-time alerts to factory command and control center. Such solutions can be deployed at smart factories and smart buildings.
  • Smart Retail
A 5G enabled AR platform that helps customers to digitally test products to assist in buying decisions. Such solutions can be deployed in sectors such as fashion, retail, education, media and telehealth.
